Headshot Resources: Top Tips for Child Actor Headshots

Victoria BC Portrait Photographer: Preparing for Your Child’s Headshot Session

When it comes to standing out in the acting world, headshots are just as important for kids as they are for adults.

In today’s blog post, I’ve put together a few tips for having an amazing headshot session for your little star!

Scheduling

When scheduling your headshot session, it’s important to plan around your child’s schedule. If your little star still naps, let your photographer know what time of day is best for your child’s headshot appointment.

One Week Before the Session

If you already have outfits in mind for your child’s photo shoot, be sure to have your child try on the clothing at least one week before your scheduled portrait date to ensure everything fits and you’re not having to find a new outfit last minute.

The Day of the Session

On the day of your child’s scheduled headshot, make time for hair styling and a low sugar snack before you leave home.

What to Wear

It’s important for your child to wear clothing that enhances their portrait while not creating any distractions. If your child is already in the acting business, check in with your agent or acting teacher to see if they have any recommendations for your child’s headshot wardrobe.

Shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and tops in solid patterns help to ensure the focus remains on just your child. It’s best to avoid clothing in neon colours and garments with distracting logos or prints.

Keep It Fun!

With kids, it’s important to get to know the photographer a bit before at the start of the session so that they feel comfortable in front of the lens.

If your child has a favourite soundtrack or artist they love to listen to, be sure to let your photographer know beforehand so that your child’s favourite tunes can play during their photo shoot.

Choosing Your Photos

After your session, you’ll receive an email with a private link to view your child’s proofs for you to choose your favourite images to be edited — viewing the resulting images and choosing your favourites is such a fun part of the experience! If you have an agent, be sure to send them the link to get their opinion when selecting images.
