Family Portrait Resources: Why I Love Esquimalt Lagoon for Family Sessions

I recently shared a blog post listing some of my favourite outdoor locations for photographing families and Esquimalt Lagoon was at the top of that list. So I thought I’d expand a bit more today and share my top 5 reasons why Esquimalt Lagoon has such a special place in my heart for capturing families:
The gorgeous Light:
As a general rule, my favourite times of day to capture families are first thing in the morning for soft, early light and right before sunset for the dramatic light golden hour has to offer.
Esquimalt Lagoon has both gorgeous light in the morning (perfect for families with young children!), AND the light is also stunning during golden hour (approx. one hour before sunset) when it sets behind the lagoon so it’s just perfect all around.
The sandy Beach & Driftwood:
There’s so much space for kids to play and run around, and the soft sand is a definite bonus. Esquimalt Lagoon never looks the same twice with the changing driftwood that washes up on shore, adding even more variety and visual interest.
It’s perfect for pets:
Esquimalt Lagoon is a pet friendly beach for families who want to include their furry family member in their photos.
The ocean and mountain Backdrop:
The views of the Olympic Mountains (on the clearer days) are absolutely breathtaking, but even on days with less visibility the ocean backdrop is incredible!
The Colours:
The soft hues of the ocean and sandy beach make the resulting family images effortless to incorporate into most home interiors for families wanting to display their images on tabletops and walls.
