Spring Family Mini Sessions in Victoria BC | Beacon Hill Park
For as long as I’ve been a family photographer, mini sessions are one of the most sought-after offerings in family photography. When I was starting out, I was hesitant to offer mini sessions as I wasn't sure I could deliver the quality I hold myself to in a condensed timeframe. What changed my mind was realizing that with the right structure, a mini session doesn't have to feel rushed. It just has to be intentional.
If you've been on the fence about booking, the question I hear most is some version of: "How are you going to capture my whole family in 15 minutes?"
Fair question. Here's the answer.
It Starts Before We Even Meet
Before your session, I send a short questionnaire. One of the things I ask is: what matters most to you from your time together?
It sounds simple, but it changes everything. I show up already knowing your priorities — which means we're not figuring it out in the field while the clock is ticking. We start with a plan, and that plan shapes every shot we take.
The Five Photos
1. The Anchor
We start here. This is your full family together — the one you'll frame, send to grandparents, and put on the holiday card. I take the time to get this one right. Everyone looks like themselves. The light is good. This is your forever photo, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.
2 & 3. The Close Ones
This is where your questionnaire comes in. These two images zoom in on the relationships within your family — smaller groupings, more intimate moments. For a two-parent family, that often means one adult with the kids, then the other. For a single parent, it might be a portrait with your child that you'll look back on for the rest of your life. For a blended family, it's whatever combination matters most right now.
Every family is different. These two shots are where I honour that.
4. Just the Kids
If you have more than one child, this one is non-negotiable. Kids grow up fast and they grow up together, and sibling photos are the ones adults go looking for decades later. There's something about capturing them at exactly this age, exactly this dynamic, that is worth everything. If you have one child, we use this slot for something else meaningful — we'll sort that out together in your questionnaire.
5. The Candid
We end loose. I give everyone permission to just be themselves — running, laughing, piling on top of each other. Whatever happens, happens. This is almost always everyone's favourite photo, and it's almost always the one nobody expected.
So — Can You Really Get All of That in 15 Minutes?
Almost always, yes. And sometimes, if we're lucky, a little more.
The reason it works is the preparation. I'm not winging it. I've scouted Beacon Hill Park and specifically chosen the 2–4pm window for the way the light moves through the trees at that time of day. I know your family's priorities from your questionnaire, and I have a clear sequence in mind before you arrive. Families are generally surprised at how unhurried it feels — even within a short window.

A mini session isn't a shortcut — it's a different kind of investment. When it's structured with intention and built around your family's specific priorities, five photos can tell your whole story. That's what I show up to do every single time. I hope to see you at Beacon Hill Park this May.
