Family Session Resources: Answers to the Top Three Questions Families Ask Before Their Session

Top Three Frequently Asked Family Session Questions | Victoria BC Family Photographer

Though it changes week to week, there are a few questions I always get asked about family sessions when clients are planning their shoot. So today I’m answering those burning questions in case you were wondering about them, too:

1: What should we wear?

Choosing complimentary colours rather than fully matching outfits will help each family member stand out in their own fun and unique way.

Adding colours, textures, and layers can provide added dimension to your pictures.

To see some additional styling tips, you can read this blog post, which lists a number of tips for what to wear (and not wear) for family photos.

2: What if my kids aren’t into it?

I’ve been photographing families for more than ten years now, and in that time, I’ve had a few family sessions where the kids just weren’t into it. A lot of the time, it’s because the kids are excited to be in a new location and just want to play — so that’s what we do!

Often having the promise of a special treat or outing after the family session can help keep the session run smoothly. I am definitely not above a good bribe!

But most of all, forget about getting the perfect shot; let your photographer worry about that. Family sessions are about celebrating each other, togetherness, and the memories these images will bring back to you years from now. Enjoy your (relatively) uninterrupted time together as a family. Relax! The picture that ends up being your favourite may not be the one you have in your mind at the time. Have fun during your session and your photos will reflect that fun. Remember, if you’re relaxed, your family will be relaxed.

3: What if I don’t feel photogenic?

Most people tell me that they don’t love having their photo taken because they feel self-conscious or don’t feel photogenic. But I’m here to tell you that you are beautiful and we will create memories that you and your family will love to look back on. It’s my job as a family photographer to capture families in locations and lighting that provide the most flattering results.
