What to Expect from a Professional Headshot Session in Victoria BC
Thinking about updating your professional headshot? Whether you've been putting it off for years or your current photo feels like a version of you from a previous life, knowing what to expect makes all the difference.
As a photographer here in Victoria, I’ve worked with everyone from nervous first-timers to seasoned executives. My goal isn't just to take a "good" picture—it's to create an image that feels like a candid conversation with your future clients.
Step 1: Choose Your Session Type
Not every professional needs the same headshot look. I’ve designed my services to match the specific way you show up in your industry.
Classic Studio Headshots: Using professional backdrops and controlled lighting, these are the gold standard for LinkedIn, firm websites, and board bios. They offer a polished, high-end feel that works perfectly for finance, law, engineering, government, real estate, education, and corporate leadership.
Actor Headshots: While these happen in the studio, the approach is entirely different. We focus on character, range, and specific industry poses that casting directors look for. It’s less about "business polish" and more about capturing your unique essence and "type."
Outdoor & Lifestyle Headshots: There is nothing quite like natural light. I recommend booking these for the hour before sunset to catch that soft, flattering golden hour glow. These are ideal for consultants, coaches, authors, counsellors, and creatives who want to feel approachable and authentic.
On-Location Team Shoots: I bring the full studio setup—lights, backdrops, and all—directly to your office. This is the most efficient way to get a cohesive look for your entire team without everyone having to leave their office.
The Visual Difference: Character vs. Clarity
While all four of these images are professional headshots captured in the studio, the purpose of an Actor Headshot (First Two Left) and a Corporate Studio Headshot (Last Two Right) is completely different.
Actor Headshots (Left): These are about character and type. Notice the variation in lighting—we might use dramatic shadows or a slightly warmer, moodier feel to capture versatility. The poses focus on expressive "storytelling" in the eyes, showing casting directors who you are and what kinds of roles you can fill.
Corporate Studio Headshots (Right): These are about connection and clarity. The lighting is clean, bright, and universally flattering. The pose is open, confident, and approachable. The goal is to establish immediate trust with clients and colleagues, presenting you as the absolute expert in your field.
Step 2: Decide Where We’ll Meet
Location sets the tone. Depending on which session type you choose, Victoria and the Westshore offer some incredible options:
My Studio: A quiet, private space where we have total control over the light and backdrops. This is the "zero-distraction" zone.
Your Office: For team shoots, I'll scout a spot in your workspace (like a boardroom or lobby) to set up my portable studio.
The Outdoors: If we’re going the natural route, I have a list of curated spots around Langford, Colwood, and Downtown Victoria that look stunning at sunset.
Step 3: Choose What to Wear
The approachable expert look usually involves layers and textures rather than stiff, formal suits (unless that’s your daily uniform).
For the Studio: Solid colours work best. Think navy, charcoal, or deep jewel tones. Avoid tiny, busy patterns—they can sometimes dance on digital screens (a phenomenon called Moiré).
For Outdoor/Sunset: Earthy tones or soft neutrals look incredible against Victoria’s natural greenery and coastal light.
For Actors: Wear something that hints at the "roles" you’re targeting, but keep it simple enough that your face remains the focal point.
Step 4: The Questionnaire (Your Secret Weapon)
Before we meet, I’ll send over a short questionnaire. This is where we bridge the gap between just a photo and a strategic business tool. I want to know:
Do you prefer a warm, open smile or a more neutral, composed expression?
Where will these photos live? (Website header, social media, or print?)
Are there any specific concerns you have with photos of yourself? I’m here to make sure we navigate those.
What to Expect on the Day
My sessions are low-pressure by design. You don't need to know how to pose—that's my job. I’ll guide you through micro-adjustments in real-time, helping you find the angles that feel most natural. Most clients walk away saying, "That was actually... fun?"
